Since the late 1980s Gayo embroidery has become a source of livelihood for its residents. This craft started is often used as complements western-style clothing products. Embroidery was then developed into a decoration on a variety of other products, such as tote bags used for formal occasions, elegant luggage bags, everyday sandals, cap and so forth. Today, embroidery is not only found in the earth Gayo, but had spread to around the capital city on the north sand of Aceh, where leather bags are made. About a century ago, the Gayo embroidery techniques has changed from tambour embroidery (chain stitch using a needle bent) coming from outside the culture to the stitching machine, but retained its traditional motifs.
